Day 2: Delhi

After a sumptuous breakfast, your private guide and driver will take you on a half-day tour of Delhi. See India Gate, a 42-meter-high stone arch bearing the names of 90,000 Indian soldiers who died in the First World War, and the Rashtrapati Bhawan, formerly the residence to viceroys prior to India’s independence and now the official residence of the President of India. Completed in 1929, the presidential palace-like building, with 340 rooms and extensive gardens, is an interesting blend of Mughal and Western architectural styles.

Later, visit Qutub Minar, a tower standing since 1199 used to call the devout for prayer at an adjoining mosque. Finish your tour by visiting Humayun's Tomb, India’s first garden-tomb, built-in 1570 to honor Humayun, the second Mughal Emperor of India. The tomb’s unique design inspired a wave of architectural innovations throughout the country, including the Taj Mahal.

The remainder of the day is at your leisure.

Day 3: Delhi

Continue your exploration of Delhi with visits to iconic sites including Chandni Chowk, Red Fort, Jama Masjid, Raj Ghat – a memorial dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi – Gurudwara Bangla Sahib, and Lodhi Garden.

Chandni Chowk, or “moonlight square”, derives its name from canals that originally ran through the marketplace, illuminating the markets with moonlight. Enjoy a rickshaw ride through Chandni Chowk, full of shops, schools, residences, and places of worship, old and new.

Next, visit Red Fort, named for the red sandstone walls that surround the royal complex. The complex was commissioned in 1638 by emperor Shah Jahan when he moved the capital of the Mughal Empire from Agra to Delhi. The palace reflects the classic Mughal architecture, with Islamic, Persian, Timurid and Hindu influences. Then visit Jama Masjid, located opposite the Red Fort; it is the largest mosque in India and one of the greatest examples of the architectural extravaganza of the Mughal era.

At Gurudwara Bangla Sahib, Delhi’s preeminent Sikh house of worship, gain a glimpse into the temple’s community kitchen. If interested, you can participate in the preparation of meals for guests in the kitchen.

Your tour for the day ends with an exploration of Lodhi Gardens, a lush, ninety-acre park. The park contains gardens, monuments, tombs, and other architectural works of the Lodhis, an Afghan dynasty that ruled parts of Northern India and Pakistan from 1451 to 1526. The park is now protected by the Archeological Survey of India.
